Brightstorm by Vashti Hardy is a fast-paced and addictive book aimed at upper primary school-aged children.
Arthur and Maudie – the two main characters – are brave, resourceful and in my opinion they are brilliant role models for children. Set in a magical world of sky-ships and thought-wolves, Brightstorm has lots of twists and turns to keep the reader guessing. I loved how Vashti Hardy portrayed Arthur’s disability in a positive way and sensitively dealt with sad moments in the story which may otherwise upset some children.
I would highly recommend it and look forward to any future sequels!
Yes! I loved how Arthur’s issues were treated with sensitivity but honesty. Another book which is great for hidden disabilities is The Girl with the Sharks teeth- Minnow struggled to learn to walk and even now is more comfortable and coordinated in the water than on land and often feels pains.

Definitely! I thought it was important to show how it impacted him without glossing over it or sugar-coating his feelings towards his disability. The Girl with the Shark’s Teeth is in my TBR pile – it might have to jump to the top now!

It’s fabulous, a really great & enthralling adventure but not epic in length so enjoyable by those who get daunted by thicker MG books.
